Supercooled large droplets in icing conditions

نویسنده

چکیده

In March 1997 NLR investigated the icing atmosphere for aircraft by flying with an instrumented research aircraft through clouds. Liquid water content, droplet diameter distributions and air temperature were measured. Large droplets were found in air masses with a limited extent. Results from the measurement campaign are presented and compared with limits in aircraft and helicopter certification requirements. The investigation was made in the framework of a European co-operation in the EURICE project, partially funded by the Directorate General VII for Transport of the European Commission.

High-Speed Imaging to Quantify the Transient Ice Accretion Process on a NACA 0012 Airfoil

Ice accretion on aircraft wings poses a performance and safety threat as aircraft encounter supercooled droplets suspended in the cloud layer. The details of the ice accretion depend on the atmospheric conditions and the flight parameters. The icing process on the wing consists of a complex interaction of water deposition, surface water transport, and freezing. The aerodynamics affect the water...

An Experimental Investigation on Unsteady Heat Transfer and Transient Icing Process upon Impingement of Water Droplets

This study presents an experimental investigation of a single droplet with different impingement velocity impinge on the hydrophilic and superhydrophobic substrates under normal and icing temperature by using high-speed image and infrared image techniques. The aim is to better understand the unsteady heat transfer and transient icing process of the aircraft icing caused by the supercooled large...

Surface Classification from Aircraft Icing Droplet Splash Images

The build up of water ice on aircraft flight surfaces poses a significant safety risk. As a result, much effort has gone into studying this problem in order to understand how individual droplets contribute to the accretion process. One approach has been to capture the moment of impact of a supercooled droplet onto a surface placed in an icing tunnel. However, this produces a large number of ima...

Rough Ice Is Bad Ice

in the early days of aviation, at the advent of thermal ice protection system development, aircraft designers believed that in fighting in-flight icing, the critical variables were the mass of supercooled water that an airplane would transit and the temperature. The measure of mass is liquid water content (LWC). Droplet size of supercooled water, which influences potential icing severity, is me...
